Working in the financial services sector, most of us were given Monday off in observance of President’s Day. The holiday is popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all of the United States presidents who have committed so much to our country. The day off got me thinking about our organization’s presidents and the time, energy and passion they have put in to making AICP what it is today.

In our early years, AICP was governed by a small board of directors lead by a chairman. That quickly evolved and in 1988 the association had its first president, Robert Lennon. In total, we have elected 32 different presidents.

Looking over the list, one thing that stands out to me is the continued involvement from those who have served in the role. It’s testament to the passion and commitment to volunteerism found in our leadership. While they may not continue to serve on the board of directors, many past presidents continue to serve as committee chairs, lead task forces or special projects, or support multiple committee’s initiatives by lending their expertise within a committee. As an association, we benefit greatly from their continued involvement.

On a more personal note, I have had the privilege of working closely with several past presidents. Their knowledge of the association and our industry have been invaluable in helping me develop in my career and navigate my journey as the current AICP president. Most important to me is that many of these people have come to be very dear friends.

If you haven’t had a chance, visit our History of Leadership page. Some of the names you see might surprise you. I think our past presidents, and others who have served on the board of directors, are largely a quiet and humble bunch, not looking for recognition or praise.

In honor of President’s Day I want to say thank you to all of the presidents who have come before me. Each of you has played an important part in leading the association to where we are today. Guided by our vision, I promise to continue the tradition and do my best to keep us growing and evolving with our industry, to be the premier source of compliance education and professional growth throughout all levels and sectors of the insurance industry.

– Bri Dahl, AICP President
