Conference Overview
AICP held its 25th annual conference in San Antonio, Texas at the Marriott Rivercenter. Attendees were welcomed to a program that strengthened their compliance bridges and formed new networking bridges needed in an increasingly complex insurance environment. Over 700 compliance professionals on hand, eager to learn more about “Compliance and Regulation:” while “Forming New Bridges”. There were 26 states represented by over 60 regulators as well as speakers from IIPRC, SERFF, NAIC, ISO, FinCen, AAIS, ACLI, and AHIP.
The 2012 AICP Conference kicked off on Sunday afternoon with a number of pre-conference sessions, as well as the Q&A portion of our program, where compliance professionals presented questions and received answers from their peers on a variety of compliance issues. Over the next three days, there were over 70 sessions focused on both Life, Health, & Annuity and Property & Casualty insurance. Topics included rate and form filing, product development, licensing, market conduct and insurance issues related to social media. As always, there were a number of excellent sessions on personal and professional development, as well as sessions relating to federal issues. Sunday evening activities included an Exhibitors’ Showcase and Welcome Reception.
Monday morning, the conference planning team recognized past presidents, education and dedication of volunteers. Eric Story of Texas Honor Ride introduced this year’s charity to attendees.
After the ever popular View from the Top session on Monday morning, the lunch keynote was presented by Eric A. Cioppa, Superintendent, Maine Department of Professional & Financial Regulation Bureau of Insurance.
The Life and Health panel provided a wide number current topics such as The Mobile Global Insured, Compliance at the Top The Path to Approval, and Market Conduct from different perspectives, plus many more. The P&C panel touched upon Anti-Fraud, The Mobile Global Insured, Catastrophe Preparedness and much more. As in previous years, we also had sessions called Compliance Connections for both LAH and P&C attendees. Attendees were able once again to network with compliance professionals sharing compliance ideas and concerns. Attendees also enjoyed the opportunity to “meet your regulators” in small group roundtable settings. This is always a very popular part of our program.
Compliance professionals, trade association representatives and regulators were on hand to present relevant, hot topics in many lines of insurance compliance that were of interest to both industry and regulatory communities. Both seasoned compliance professionals as well as new to the industry attendees find conference to provide a variety of quality education sessions.
Tuesday evening was set aside as the evening for Chapter members to meet and network and have some fun, and what a great variety of chapter events there were! Members of one chapter rode an evening riverboat cruise, another chapter had an dinner and an evening of ghostly stories of the Menger Hotel and yet two more chapters partnered for a trolley tour of historic San Antonio followed dinner at Aldaco’s Mexican Restaurant. Other chapters enjoyed dinner at the Lone Star Café, Iron Cactus, and Acenar Mexican Restaurant. A memorable and tasty evening it was for many members and friends!
Tuesday morning’s keynote as presented by Internationally acclaimed expert on humor and communication, Malcolm Kushner. Mr. Kusher shared his concept of “Leading with laughter”. Mr. Kusher not only conducted a breakout session for attendees on Tuesday with his unique style, he also donated several copies of his book to the AICP. After a full day of information packed sessions, Tuesday evening was free time, and a chance to walk the Riverwalk and explore the various local attractions.
While many attendees had return flights on Wednesday, attendees continue to attend sessions on Wednesday morning!

Welcome to San Antonio!
The extracurricular/welcome table volunteers were on hand to meet and greet those arriving and provide lots of information about local attractions and lots of discounts for the San Antonio activities.
Chapter members were able to find one another by a chapter specific badge lanyard again this year.

Welcome Reception!
Registered attendees and guests shred an evening of boot scooting music and line dancing, courtesy of local talent Wayne Wesley, while chowing down on local Texas vittles. This was a great opportunity to relax and unwind in jeans after travel journeys, reconnecting with existing AICP colleagues and making new acquaintances.

The Exhibitor hall was a very popular (and productive) place to be during breaks and before evening activities with over 30 booths staffed by experts in all phases of compliance, with great information combined with refreshments. The exhibitors were eager to share the latest in products and services designed to streamline and enhance regulatory compliance processes. Once again, we had a popular compliance puzzle for attendees to complete to be eligible for some really great prizes.

Education Designation Recognition
Providing learning opportunities is one of our Association’s keystones and is embedded within our Mission Statement. Recognition of those of our members who participate and guide their continuing education to become more informed and more equipped to face the challenges within our community is natural to us.
This year members who received their ACP and/or CCP designations, and those who received CE credits, were honored this year.
The ACP designation went to David Benedict, Cynthia Linn Searls, Joyelle Endres, Cynthia Morton, Suzanne Augustine, Larisa Woodward, Harold Jamison, Belinda Randall, Elizabeth Lee and Elizabeth A. Loon
The CCP designation went to Deborah Furman (Miller), Diane Karis and Andrea Coalson.

AICP Supports Texas Honor Ride
Keeping with tradition, we once again held fund raising events to support a local charity. This year’s efforts raised funds for Texas Honor Ride, an organization that assists our wounded military personnel, both present and past, along with their families in many different ways. All funds collected by the Honor Ride go directly to the Warrior and Family Support Center (WFSC), which is on base at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
Tom Tomlinson’s challenge to attendees brought appreciated support to the Texas Honor Ride.
There was also a donation bowl for those who simply wanted to donate without bidding in the silent auction.
Thank you to each of the generous silent auction donations. We were able to donate $8,000 to this very worthy organization. Thanks to all who played a part in making it happen!

National Officers
Annual Conference is the time for us to recognize our National Officers, say “thank you” to those who are leaving our Board of Directors, and say “welcome” to those who are staying on and are being added to our Board of Directors. It is also a time for a passing of the gavel from our President to our Incoming President.
At Tuesday’s business lunch Karen Crooks thanked the 2012 Board of Directors and introduced our Incoming President, Doug Simino. Doug then introduced the members of his 2012-2013 Board of Directors. We thank all who serve on our Board for the valuable service they provide to enhance our association and strengthen our value offering within the insurance compliance industry.

President’s Walk!
New this year, was the President’s Walk with Karen Crooks. This was an inspiring 3 mile walk with our President. Each walker received a bottle of water and had a chance to stop for a sweet cinnamon roll treat during the walk.
President’s Award and Lennon Award
Each year, the AICP honors two volunteers with the following awards for their “above and beyond” efforts in serving the AICP.
The Lennon Award is AICP’s most prestigious award. The Lennon award was named after one of our founding fathers who was not only instrumental in the initial development of our organization but contributed years of service. He was so committed to our association that he even gave a session presentation over the phone — two days before he passed away. The winner of the Lennon Award is nominated by his/her peers, and the final selection is done by members of the Executive Committee.
The 2012 Lennon Award was awarded to Susan Eckler-Kerns. Congratulations, Susan for an honor so well deserved!
The President’s Award provides our President the ability to recognize an individual member or members who have demonstrated excellent service to the AICP during their term. The 2012 President’s Award was awarded to two individuals:
- Peggy Schwartz. Congratulations, Peggy, for an honor well deserved!
- Mike Hollar — A well deserved award for this hard working AICP member!
