Underwriter – Commercial Property & Casualty

Description

About the Underwriter Position

At WAIC, we do things differently. With fewer than 25 employees, we’re more like a family than a corporation. We foster a collaborative, engaging work environment where individual contributions are valued, and we invest in our employees’ success. We believe in underwriting with intelligence and creativity – our philosophy is to find ways to say “yes” when it makes sense, rather than following rigid rules.

We’re looking for an Underwriter who shares our mindset—someone who is intellectually curious, adaptable, and eager to grow within a company that values expertise over titles.

What You’ll Do:

Analyze new business submissions and renewals to determine risk acceptability and pricing.
Apply underwriting guidelines (not just rules) to craft profitable solutions.
Collaborate with agents to strengthen relationships and develop new business.
Maintain and manage an assigned book of business, with account sizes ranging from $25,000 to $4 million.
Assist in reporting and analyzing data on assigned accounts.
Review and approve policies and endorsements issued by assistants.
Ensure underwriting quality by adhering to company standards and turnaround times.
Report directly to the Chief Underwriting Officer while also working closely with the CEO on strategic underwriting decisions.

Resume Information

What We’re Looking For

No degree required. We care about what you know and how you think, not where (or if) you went to school.
2-5 years of underwriting experience. Experience as an underwriting assistant or equivalent may be counted towards some of this required experience.
Background in commercial underwriting preferred but not required. We are not seeking experience in high-volume, commodity-type insurance (e.g., homeowners, auto).
Military experience is highly valued and may be considered toward applicable underwriting experience.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and relationship management abilities.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including:
Word (document creation, reporting, executive summaries)
Excel (data analysis, formulas, charting)
PowerPoint (presentation design, animations, transitions)
Outlook & Teams (email, scheduling, virtual collaboration).
Desire to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
