The Mosaic Reads: a DEIB Discussion Group
Welcome to The Mosaic Reads, a discussion group hosted by the DEIB Committee of the AICP. The committee will be hosting this group periodically to discuss issues pertaining to DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.) The format of the discussions will revolve around different pieces of writing selected by the committee. These sessions will be hosted on Zoom and are open to all AICP members.
Our first session will be on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, where we will be discussing the article “Overcome DEIB Resistance.” A link to the article is provided below, along with two discussion questions to contemplate before joining the session.
DATE: Wednesday, November 12 at 2:00 pm Eastern
ARTICLE: Overcome DEIB Resistance
It is a short article that should not take more than 10-15 minutes to read. In the interest of facilitating a substantive discussion, please consider the following questions to help foster a conversation about the article. Do feel free to bring other thoughts or comments to the discussion in addition to the topics presented below.
DISCUSSION QUESTION 1: The author encourages “empathic leadership” as a method for addressing DEIB resistance. What would empathic leadership look like and how can it help?
DISCUSSION QUESTION 2: Have DEIB initiatives focused on a “shame and blame” model that discourages participation from men and non-minorities? How can these programs welcome and encourage everyone while still acknowledging the unique challenges faced by minority groups and women?
